b791dfb558 CI: require and test CI_DESIRED_NETWORK on RHEL
Although podman has moved on from CNI, RHEL has not. Make
sure that builds on RHEL test the desired network backend(s).

Effective immediately, gating.yaml on all RHEL branches
must set CI_DESIRED_NETWORK (=cni or =netavark)

d4c0e7ecbd CI: test composefs on rawhide
Run root e2e & system tests using composefs on rawhide.

Write magic settings to storage.conf. That part is easy.

e2e tests, however, ignore storage.conf. They require everything
to be specified on the command line. And "everything", in the
case of composefs, includes a long complicated --pull-options
string which in turn requires containers-storage PR 1966
which, as of this writing, is finally vendored into podman.

26cd01ee51 Do not test CNI in CI
CNI is deprecated and is build tagged out for 5.0. Don't test it in our CI.
This commit also disables upgrade tests for now - those need more work since the old version of Podman only uses CNI. Upgrade tests will be re-vamped in a later commit.

cf0b436b96 Deprecate BoltDB, preventing creation of new databases.
This is one of the breaking changes in Podman 5.0: removing the
ability to create new instances of the old Bolt database. This
does not remove support for the database entirely, as existing
Bolt databases will still be usable, but all new installs will
use SQLite after this point - if Bolt is forced by config, we'll
just error.

We don't have plans to outright remove the Bolt code. If that
were to happen, it'd be Podman 6.0 at least, and a significant
enough change it'd warrant a lot of discussion and planning. We
do intend to start winding down support of BoltDB, though, and
new features may be added only to SQLite from here on.

I have added an escape hatch via an undocumented environment
variable that allows us to continue testing BoltDB in CI (and, if
necessary, locally) but I don't want this to be used for any
purpose except continued testing of the old DB to ensure we don't
break it.

f384bdf66b Handle symlinks when checking DB vs runtime configs
When Podman starts, it checks a number of critical runtime paths
against stored values in the database to make sure that existing
containers are not broken by a configuration change. We recently
made some changes to this logic to make our handling of the some
options more sane (StaticDir in particular was set based on other
passed options in a way that was not particularly sane) which has
made the logic more sensitive to paths with symlinks. As a simple
fix, handle symlinks properly in our DB vs runtime comparisons.

The BoltDB bits are uglier because very, very old Podman versions
sometimes did not stuff a proper value in the database and
instead used the empty string. SQLite is new enough that we don't
have to worry about such things.

29d18079cb [systests] new defer-assertion-failure
Some system tests run deep loops:

  for x in a b c; do
    for y in d e f; do
        .... check condition $x + $y

Normally, if one of these fails, game over. This can be frustrating
to a developer looking for failure patterns.

Here we introduce a new defer-assertion-failure function, meant
to be called before loops like these. Everything is the same,
except that tests will continue running even after failure.

When test finishes, or if test runs immediate-assertion-failure,
a new message indicates that multiple tests failed:

FAIL: X test assertions failed. Search for 'FAIL': above this line.

a10b88cb2f CI: test overlay and vfs
We're only testing vfs in CI. That's bad. #18822 tried to
remedy that but that only worked on system tests, not e2e.

Here we introduce CI_DESIRED_STORAGE, to be set in .cirrus.yml
in the same vein as all the other CI_DESIRED_X. Since it's 2023
we default to overlay, testing vfs only in priorfedora.

Fixes required:
 - e2e tests:
   - in cleanup, umount ROOT/overlay to avoid leaking mounts

 - system tests:
   - fix a few badly-written tests that assumed/hardcoded overlay
   - buildx test: add weird exception to device-number test
   - mount tests: add special case code for vfs
   - unprivileged test: disable one section that is N/A on vfs

use sqlite as default database
Use sqlite as default but for upgrades it will still use boltdb to avoid
breaking anyone. This is done by checking if the boltdb file already
exists and if it does then we have to use it.

I added a e2e test to check the new logic and removed the system test
for it, the problem with the system test is that we share the storage
dir there so all following commands without --db-backend would try to
use boltdb as a single --db-backend boltdb command will create the file
and then all folllwing commands will use it because of the backwards
compat. In e2e tests each test uses their own --root so it is not an
issue there.

f95276bfaf CI: enable sqlite system tests
In setup, write a containers.conf.d file with db_backend
as specified in .cirrus.yml.

This is actually much scarier and more achy-breaky than
merely "sqlite system tests": it enables sqlite in e2e
tests. ("But wait, we already do that!" -- no, not really.
sqlite in e2e is being done via --db-backend option, and
some podman commands in e2e do not use the standard options.
See #17904.

This is unlikely to get merged any time soon (March, maybe
even April) because sqlite is still too fragile; this will
trigger more flakes than are currently acceptable. Also,
the nasty auto-update flake seems to trigger much more
reliably with sqlite. We need that one fixed.

c5fc44582f add CONTAINERS_CONF_OVERRIDE
Add yet another environment variable for loading containers.conf.
When CONTAINERS_CONF_OVERRIDE is set, the specified config file
will be loaded last - even when CONTAINERS_CONF is set.

This mechanism is needed to preserve system settings and other
environment variables. Setting CONTAINERS_CONF will load only
the specified config file and ignore all system and user paths.
That makes testing hard as many Podman tests use CONTAINERS_CONF
for testing.

The intended use of CONTAINERS_CONF_OVERRIDE is to set it during tests
and point it to a specific configuration of Podman (e.g., netavark with
sqlite backend).

Similar needs have popped up talking to users in the automotive and
high-performance computing space. In a way, such a setting allows for
specifying a specific "flavor" of Podman while preserving all existing
settings on the system.

0a160fed77 Bump VMs, to Ubuntu 2204 with cgroups v1
...and enable the at-test-time confirmation, the one that
double-checks that if CI requests runc we actually use runc.
This exposed a nasty surprise in our setup: there are steps to
define $OCI_RUNTIME, but that's actually a total fakeout!
OCI_RUNTIME is used only in e2e tests, it has no effect
whatsoever on actual podman itself as invoked via command
line such as in system tests. Solution: use containers.conf

Given how fragile all this runtime stuff is, I've also added
new tests (e2e and system) that will check $CI_DESIRED_RUNTIME.

Since we haven't actually been testing with runc, we need
to fix a few tests:

  - handle an error-message change (make it work in both crun and runc)
  - skip one system test, "survive service stop", that doesn't
work with runc and I don't think we care.

...and skip a bunch, filing issues for each:

  - #15013 pod create --share-parent
  - #15014 timeout in dd
  - #15015 checkpoint tests time out under $CONTAINER
  - #15017 networking timeout with registry
  - #15018 restore --pod gripes about missing --pod
  - #15025 run --uidmap broken
  - #15027 pod inspect cgrouppath broken
  - ...and a bunch more ("podman pause") that probably don't
    even merit filing an issue.

Also, use /dev/urandom in one test (was: /dev/random) because
the test is timing out and /dev/urandom does not block. (But
the test is still timing out anyway, even with this change)

Also, as part of the VM switch we are now using go 1.18 (up
from 1.17) and this broke the gitlab tests. Thanks to @Luap99
for a quick fix.

Also, slight tweak to #15021: include the timeout value, and
reword message so command string is at end.

Also, fixed a misspelling in a test name.

bf94ebf423 System tests: tighten 'is' operator
Fix day-one sloppiness: when I first wrote this framework
it compared strings using 'expr', not '=', to be more
forgiving of extra cruft in output. This was a bad decision.
It means that warnings or additional text are ignored:

is "all is ok, NOT!" "all is ok" <-- this would pass

Solution: tighten up the 'is' check. Use '=' (direct
compare) first. If it fails, look for wild cards ('*')
or character classes ('[') in the expect string. If
so, and only then, use 'expr'. And, thanks to a clever
suggestion from Luap99, include '(using expr)' in the
error message when we do so; this could make it easier
for a developer to understand a string mismatch.

This change exposes a lot of instances in which we weren't
doing proper comparisons. Fix those. Thankfully, there
weren't as many as I'd feared.

Also, and completely unrelated, add '-T' flag to bats
helper, for showing timing results. (I will open this
as a separate PR if requested. I too find it offensive
to jumble together unrelated commits.)

ecf1033023 podman info: try qfile before equery
podman info takes >20s on Gentoo, because equery is s..l..o..w.
qfile is much faster and, I suspect, present in most Gentoo
installations, so let's try it first.

And, because packageVersion() was scarily unmaintainable,
refactor it. Define a simple (string) list of packaging tools
to query (rpm, dpkg, ...) and iterate until we find one that
works.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the Debian (and, presumably, Ubuntu) query does not
include version number! There is no standard way on Debian to get
a package version from a file path, you can only do it via pipes
of chained commands, and I have no desire to implement that.

Clear the storage-options from the graphdriver if users specifies --root
Fixes: https://github.com/containers/podman/issues/10393

Currently if a user specifies a --root flag to override the location of
the container storage, we still enforce the storage-opts from
storage.conf. This causes issues with people trying to intereact with
the additional stores feature, and then forces them to use the obscure
--storage-opt="" option. I belive this should be the default and we
already do this when the user specifies the --storage-driver option.

9fd7ab50f8 System tests: honor $OCI_RUNTIME (for CI)
Some CI systems set $OCI_RUNTIME as a way to override the
default crun. Integration (e2e) tests honor this, but system
tests were not aware of the convention; this means we haven't
been testing system tests with runc, which means RHEL gating
tests are now failing.

The proper solution would be to edit containers.conf on CI
systems. Sorry, that would involve too much CI-VM work.
Instead, this PR detects $OCI_RUNTIME and creates a dummy
containers.conf file using that runtime.

Add: various skips for tests that don't work with runc.

e628487525 system tests: helpers: safer parse_table
The parse_table() helper has until now dumbly split lines
on every single '|' character. This prevents us from running
simple tests such as 'cgroupManager: (systemd|cgroupfs)'.

We now use an ugly but robust sed expression to split
on '|' but *only* when surrounded by spaces and/or beginning
or end of line. This is safe because, for readability, all
tables already keep the '|' symbols well separated from
table content.

Add tests. And, the whole reason behind this, add

cab7bfbb21 Add a MissingRuntime implementation
When a container is created with a given OCI runtime, but then it

Providing a minimal OCI runtime implementation for missing

each missing runtime. For containers which are stopped, we can

bd0582dd34 BATS tests - get working again
Various small fixes to get BATS tests working again.
Split from #2947 because that one keeps getting stalled,
and I'm hoping these separate changes get approved.

I consider these changes urgent because RHEL8 gating

gets picked up and packaged for RHEL8, and I consider
it important to have clean passing tests for RHEL8.

  * info test: 'insecure registries' is gone. A recent
commit (d1a7378aa) changed the format of 'podman info',
removing the 'insecure registries' key. Deal with it.

  * info test: remove check for .host.{Conmon,OCIRuntime}.package;
the value on f28 and f29 is 'Unknown' (instead of an NVR).
We can live without this check.

  * 'load' test: skip when running in CI, because stdin
    is not a tty.

  * container restore: fix arg processing. #2272 broke argument
processing: 'podman container restore', with no args, should
exit with 'argument required' error. Root cause is that the
new --import option takes the place of an argument, so the
checkAllAndLatest() call had to be changed to not exit on error.

7220c166d4 BATS tests: start supporting podman-remote
podman-remote now supports rm! That's what we needed to start
running BATS tests.

Although most tests don't actually work, some do, and maybe
the rest will start working over time. For now, disable them.

The only significant difference found is that podman-remote
strips fractional seconds from timestamps in JSON output.
Probably not something worth caring about.

589248d2f3 Implement review feedback
- document a recommended convention for fail-fast tests

- document the requirement for jq. (And, add a fail-fast
test for its presence; remove the duplicated checks
  in subtests)

- add further sanity checks to 'help' test. Add missing
documentation. Remove a no-longer-needed workaround for
  usage-message bug fixed in #2486

- add a documented TEMPLATE

- and, since we're at 1.1, enable 'Remote API' check in
  version test

- better diagnostics in setup/teardown; add vim filetype hint;
  better formatting of actual-vs-expect errors

- new pod-top, logs, build tests

- improve error messages

- add $IMAGE alias for ridiculous $PODMAN_TEST_IMAGE_FQN

- final cleanup, in prep for merge

681eae9bcc new system tests under BATS
Initial attempt at writing a framework for podman system tests.
The idea is to define a useful set of primitives that will
make it easy to write actual tests and to interpret results
of failing ones.

This is a proof-of-concept right now; only a small number of
tests, by no means comprehensive. I am requesting review in
order to find showstopper problems: reasons why this approach
cannot work. Should there be none, we can work toward running
these as gating tests for Fedora and RHEL8.
